The 2019|2020 DSAV Learn-To-Swim Program is in Partnership with the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown, The Thomases Family Endowment, DSAV, and All Abilities Swim.

The DSAV Learn To Swim Program won a National Award in 2018 from the Down Syndrome Affiliates in Action Organization for Best Recreational Program!

Sessions:

  • Fall: October 10-November 21

Important Information:

  • All Classes are held on Thursdays
  • All Classes are held at the Jewish Community Center
  • Level 1: 6:00-6:30 pm
  • Level 2: 6:30-7:15 pm
  • 6 classes are included in each session. Week 7 is a makeup date only.

Level Information

DSAV Level 1

Skills Taught

  • Blowing bubbles
  • Putting face in the water/going under
  • Laying on back/ears under
  • Climbing out
  • Jumping in and returning to the wall
  • Holding the side
  • Safely navigate the perimeter of the pool while holding onto the side
  • Traveling/kicking on front and back with coach assistance
  • Build confidence in the water and being in the horizontal body position
  • Waiting our turn with parent guidance
  • Socialization with peers
  • Water Safety Basic Rules
  • Pool Etiquette 

  Class Structure

  • 5 individuals:1 instructor maximum
  • Ages 3 and up
  • 6, 30-minute classes
  • Level 1 is 6:00-6:30
  • Fast-paced, High energy
  • Class starts and ends on time.
  • Week 7 is a makeup ONLY if instructor cancels a class during the first 6 weeks. 
  • Note: Children will be taking turns, so there will be down-time between turns. 

Children should be at least age 3. ***Parents are expected to monitor and supervise their children while they are waiting for their turn to ensure child safety.   ***Children who cannot touch the bottom (3.5 feet) should be in Level 1 for at least one session. 


DSAV Level 2

Skills taught:

  • Front and Back floats unassisted
  • Exhale underwater, breathe in over the water in a rhythmic manner
  • Wearing goggles
  • Jumping in/Climbing out
  • Beginning Freestyle and Backstroke including kicking and arm motions
  • Build confidence in the water and being in the horizontal body position
  • Waiting our turn
  • Water Safety Rules
  • Pool Etiquette
  • Socialization
  • Interacting with our peers through play

 Class Structure:

  • 7 individuals:1 instructor maximum
  • 6, 45-minute classes
  • Level 2 is from 6:30-7:15
  • Class starts and ends on time.
  • individualized instruction where appropriate
  • Week 7 is a makeup ONLY if instructor cancels a class during the first 6 weeks.
  • Children will be taking turns, so there will be down-time between turns.
  • Must be able to stand and touch the bottom in 3.5 feet of water
  • Must be comfortable in the water, and willing to blow bubbles/put face in the water 

Children who cannot sit to wait for their turn should have parent supervision during the wait period.  If your child cannot touch the bottom (3.5 feet deep) please register for Level 1 unless Coach Caroline gave the OK for level 2.
